Studies have shown that essential fatty acid supplementation can show significant benefits for those suffering from cardiovascular diseases. Omega 3 fatty acids have also been shown to reduce most risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease such as high blood fats, high blood pressure, platelet stickiness, and to help keep the inside of the arteries smooth and the heart beat regular.
Various tests and studies with those who eat diets high in fish oils such as those following a Mediterranean diet or the Inuit Eskimos as well as those taking fish oil supplements have shown that omega-3 essential fatty acids tend to increase the good cholesterol while decreasing triglycerides or bad cholesterol levels.
Omega 3 essential fatty acids have also been found to significantly lower blood pressure in those who suffer from high blood pressure which is another contributing factor to cardiovascular disease.
The FDA has also just announced qualified health claims for omega 3 essential fatty acids whereby foods containing EPA and DHA omega 3 fatty acids may now contain a label such as "Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega 3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease". "Coronary Heart Disease is a significant health problem that causes 500,000 deaths annually in the United States," said Dr Lester M Crawford, Acting FDA Commissioner. "This new qualified health claim for omega-3 fatty acids should help consumers as they work to improve their health by identifying foods that contain these important compounds."
There is also evidence to support the fact that omega-3 essential fatty acids can help treat atherosclerosis by inhibiting the development of plagues and clots. The blood thinning effects of omega 3 essential fatty acids when combined with aspirin may also be helpful in cardiovascular diseases but this should be taken under careful supervision of your doctor.
There is strong support for the fact that essential fatty acids may be used in the treatment of patients suffering from cardiovascular disease and to help prevent cardiovascular disease in healthy people. These essential fatty acids help reduce bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels as well as increasing good cholesterol levels and preventing plaque and clot build ups.
